A vitrectomy is a specialised eye surgery used to treat conditions affecting the retina and vitreous—the clear, gel-like substance that fills the centre of the eye. During the procedure, the vitreous gel is carefully removed and replaced with a clear solution, gas bubble, or silicone oil, allowing your ophthalmic surgeon to access and repair the retina.
Vitrectomy is commonly performed to treat retinal detachment, macular holes, diabetic eye disease, vitreous haemorrhage, epiretinal membranes (macular puckers), and certain eye injuries or infections. The goal is to preserve or improve vision and prevent further damage to the eye.
At Battersea Hospital, our experienced vitreoretinal surgeons use advanced microsurgical techniques and state-of-the-art technology to deliver precise treatment with the highest standards of patient care.

A vitrectomy is commonly used to treat retinal detachment, diabetic vitreous haemorrhage, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, eye trauma, and certain retinal infections or complications.
Many patients experience improved or stabilised vision following vitrectomy. The outcome depends on the condition being treated and how much damage was present before surgery.
For some retinal conditions, particularly after macular hole or retinal detachment surgery, your surgeon may recommend specific head positioning for several days to help the eye heal properly.
Initial recovery usually takes a few weeks, although vision may continue to improve over several months depending on your condition and the treatment performed.
