Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reshapes, repositions or reduces the size of the ears to improve facial balance and symmetry. The procedure is most commonly performed to correct ears that protrude significantly from the head, but it can also address ear asymmetry, misshapen ears or deformities caused by injury or previous surgery.
Many people are born with ears that are more prominent than average due to the way the cartilage developed. Although this has no effect on hearing, it can affect confidence, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Otoplasty repositions and reshapes the cartilage to create ears that sit closer to the head while maintaining a natural appearance.
The procedure is suitable for both adults and children once the ears have reached their full development, usually from around the age of five or six.
Every otoplasty procedure is carefully tailored to the individual, ensuring the ears remain proportionate to the face while achieving a balanced, symmetrical result.

What can otoplasty correct?

At what age can otoplasty be performed?
Otoplasty is commonly performed from around five or six years of age, once the ears have reached most of their adult size. It is also a popular procedure for adults.
Will the results look natural?
Yes. Our consultant plastic surgeons aim to create ears that look balanced and proportionate while maintaining their natural shape and contour.
Will I have visible scars?
Incisions are usually made behind the ears, where scars are well concealed and become less noticeable as they heal.
How long is the recovery?
Most patients return to work, school or normal daily activities within seven to ten days. A protective headband may be recommended during the initial healing period and while sleeping for several weeks.
Will the procedure affect my hearing?
No. Otoplasty changes the appearance of the outer ear only and does not affect hearing.
Are the results permanent?
Yes. The changes made during otoplasty are intended to be permanent, providing long-lasting improvement in the shape and position of the ears.
When will I see my final results?
Although you'll notice an immediate improvement after surgery, swelling will continue to settle over the following weeks. Final results are typically visible within two to three months, revealing naturally positioned, symmetrical ears.
