Septoplasty Surgery

Improve breathing and function with specialist ENT care.

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated nasal septum, improving airflow through the nose and relieving symptoms such as chronic nasal blockage, difficulty breathing and recurrent sinus infections. By restoring the normal structure of the nasal passages, septoplasty can significantly improve both comfort and quality of life.

At Battersea Hospital, our experienced consultant ENT surgeons provide personalised septoplasty procedures using advanced techniques to restore healthy nasal function while ensuring the highest standards of patient care.

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to straighten the nasal septum—the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nasal passages. When the septum is significantly deviated, it can restrict airflow, making it difficult to breathe through one or both sides of the nose.

A deviated septum may develop naturally during growth or result from a previous injury to the nose. In many cases, it can contribute to chronic nasal congestion, frequent sinus infections, nosebleeds, snoring and disturbed sleep.

During septoplasty, your consultant surgeon carefully reshapes or repositions the septum to improve airflow while preserving the structural support of the nose. The procedure focuses on restoring normal nasal function rather than changing the external appearance of the nose.

If cosmetic changes are also desired, your surgeon may recommend a septorhinoplasty, which combines septoplasty with nose reshaping surgery.

Appointments and Consultations

What is a deviated septum?

A deviated septum occurs when the wall separating the two nasal passages is displaced to one side, reducing airflow and making it more difficult to breathe through the nose.

No. Septoplasty is performed to improve nasal function and breathing. It does not usually alter the external appearance of the nose. If cosmetic changes are also desired, septorhinoplasty may be recommended.

Septoplasty typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the procedure.

Most patients experience mild discomfort rather than significant pain. Any discomfort is usually well managed with prescribed pain relief during the recovery period.

Most patients return to work and normal daily activities within seven to ten days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for approximately four weeks while healing takes place.

If your snoring is caused by a blocked nasal airway due to a deviated septum, septoplasty may improve it. However, snoring can have several causes, and your surgeon will discuss whether septoplasty is likely to help in your individual case.

Yes. Septoplasty permanently corrects the position of the nasal septum, providing long-lasting improvement in airflow for most patients.

Some improvement is often noticed once the initial swelling settles. As healing progresses over the following weeks, breathing typically continues to improve, with the full benefits usually experienced within two to three months.
