Carpal tunnel syndrome can affect sensation, grip and everyday hand function. At Battersea Hospital, your consultant will assess your symptoms and recommend a personalised plan, from non-surgical care through to carpal tunnel release where appropriate.
BOOK A CONSULTATION MEET OUR SURGEONCarpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. It can cause numbness, tingling, weakness and pain in the hand and wrist. Symptoms are often more noticeable at night or during repetitive activity.
If wrist splinting, activity changes or a steroid injection have not provided enough relief, your consultant may discuss carpal tunnel release. The operation creates more room for the median nerve by releasing the ligament over the tunnel. It is commonly performed as a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic.

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist. It commonly causes numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in the hand and fingers, often with symptoms that are worse at night.
Surgery may be discussed if symptoms are getting worse or have not improved enough with options such as a wrist splint, activity changes or a steroid injection. Your consultant will assess whether surgery is appropriate for you.
The surgeon releases the ligament forming the roof of the carpal tunnel to create more space and reduce pressure on the median nerve. It is usually a day-case procedure performed under local anaesthetic and commonly takes 15–30 minutes.
Light activity is often possible within 1–2 weeks, with fuller recovery commonly taking 6–12 weeks. Recovery varies with the severity and duration of nerve compression, your work and your individual healing.
